The cabin sleeps a total of six people – four in two queen size beds in two separate rooms plus an additional two single beds in common spaces.

Yes, children are allowed. Children will count towards the total capacity of six people. Be aware that there are two elevated landings with partial railings that could potentially be a danger for children who are not mindful.

Unfortunately due to adverse experiences we have had with allowing pets at the cabin, we regret to inform you that as of 19 July 2022 we are no longer pet friendly.

We will accommodate pets for all bookings made on or before 19 July 2022 according to the following rules:

  • A maximum of two dogs allowed per stay.
  • Dogs are not permitted on the furniture (including the couches, beds, chairs, tables, etc.)
  • Be aware that there is a friendly dog that is owned by a permanent member of the nature reserve who wanders through the reserve freely.
  • No dogs are to interfere with fauna in the area.
  • Please be respectful of the cabin and its surroundings and ensure they are left in the same way you found them.
  • Please bring along your dog’s own bedding, water bowl and anything else you may need.

Most of the road from the entrance of the reserve to the cabin is concrete, and there is approximately 300m of gravel road that most ordinary cars will be able to handle. However, it is very steep and we recommend that you do it in daylight hours. The roads in the reserve are currently not signposted so please follow the instructions and map provided to you prior to your stay. Once you reach the cabin, there are three short flights of steep stairs (without railings) leading down from the parking lot to the cabin itself; please ensure you are within reasonable fitness and feel comfortable managing this. We’ve created a short drive-through video recording of what is required to give you a better idea – click here to watch it.

Gas geyser, gas hob, solar fridge, kettle, toaster, shower, bath, indoor fireplace, outdoor gas braai, solar power for lights and charging small devices, self-catering equipped kitchen. Calabash Bush Pub is located at the entrance to the reserve (750m from the cabin) which offers a stocked bar and restaurant open six days a week (see menu).

As the cabins run off solar power there is no oven or microwave, but there is a 2 plate gas stove, kettle and toaster as well as a solar fridge/freezer. The kitchen is otherwise fully equipped with everything that you will need, including pots, pans, cutlery and crockery. We provide basics like tea, coffee, salt and pepper. Calabash Bush Pub, located at the entrance to the reserve (750m away) is open six days a week for those who want a break from cooking.

We supply braai grids and tongs, bedding, indoor towels, tea, coffee, sugar, salt & pepper and hand soap.

Limited solar power is available. However, this is extremely dependent on the weather. Sunny days will see large amounts of electricity while very cloudy days may have next to no power. The duration of the solar power depends on the usage of the individual guest, however, when the batteries are full (i.e. after a sunny day), it should be sufficient to power lights, charge cellphones and other small devices as reasonably necessary. In the event that there is no power, oil lanterns are available but please bring along anything else you may need.

Please note that when there is no power, it will affect the water pressure to the cabin which is pressurised by a pump that requires electricity to operate. Low water pressure results in difficulty achieving hot water which means that it may potentially result in there being no hot water.

Please also note that where there is no power, all devices that require power to operate do not work. This includes but is not limited to: Lights, water pump, fridge, Wi-Fi router, bluetooth speakers, etc.

Feel free to bring along any additional lights, power banks, or any other items that you may need during your stay in the event that there is no power.

NB: Please remember to be mindful when using power at all times for your own benefit as it is in limited supply.

All of the water in the cabin is pumped from an aquifer in the nature reserve and nearby rivers. We do not carry out any tests on the water. If you do not feel comfortable drinking the water, we strongly recommend bringing your own drinking water with you.

Yes, the cabin has free Wi-Fi for guests. It works on a cellular connection and has a speed of around 10 Mbps. We kindly ask that guests maintain a fair usage policy of no more than 8 GB per night’s stay (total for all guests combined)

No open fires are allowed outside the cabin whatsoever, with the exception of the gas braai provided. This includes the use of any matches or lighters outside of the cabin.

No loud music that may be a disturbance to the neighbours is allowed. Please be cognisant of the fact you will be staying in a nature reserve and there are other sounds you may enjoy hearing.

Please be mindful that the cabin is situated within a nature reserve that is shared with a plethora of wildlife, such as small field mice, mongeese, birds, spiders and snakes. In addition to the normal “creepy-crawlies” one would expect in the mountains, there are baboons that move through the nature reserve and there have been sightings of Cape leopards on extremely rare occasions though only on isolated slopes.

With this in mind, whenever you leave the cabin unattended, please ensure that all doors and windows are closed.

There is a comprehensive list of adventures provided here that include wine tasting, gin tasting, hiking, trail running, mountain biking and swimming.

There are several farmstalls along the R43 stocked with the basics. We would recommend Rietdakkie Padstal & Plaaskombuis approximately 5-10 minutes away (8 km) which has a decent selection of fresh produce from local farms, bread, milk as well as home brewed coffee and tea and freshly baked pies and quiches.

The closest supermarket is a small OK Minimart in Wolseley approximately 15 min (15 km) away. There are larger shops slightly further away in Tulbagh or Worcester both approximately 25 min (35 km). You can usually get firewood from Calabash Bush Pub at the entrance to the reserve (750m).

If cancelling 30 days before arrival, you will forfeit 50% of the booking total. If cancelling 14 days before arrival, you will forfeit 100% of the booking total. Please note refunds can take up to two weeks to be processed and may contain a nominal administration fee.
