Location

Where nature takes centre stage

Nestled within the 660 hectare Mount Bain Private Nature Reserve in the scenic foothills of Bainskloof, South Africa, Stonewood Mountain Cabin is a convenient weekend getaway just an hour and a half’s drive from Cape Town. Set high up on the fynbos-clad slopes of Bainskloof, the cabin overlooks scenic farmland, vineyards, wild proteas, rivers and mountains, some of which are capped with a blanket of snow in the winter season.

The nearby farming and wine-making towns of Tulbagh, Wellington and Ceres are all within easy reach. For those in the mood to explore, various wine estates and gin distilleries as well as hiking and biking trails are a short drive away. See our adventures for more.

Access to the cabin

A lockbox provides convenient self-check-in so you’re free to come and go as you please. Codes will be provided prior to check-in.

Please note: The road leading up to the cabin has a 300m steep gravel stretch that most cars and confident drivers should manage. However, as it is very steep and winding, we would highly recommend that you do it in daylight. See our video.

Directions

GPS: Google Maps (-33.52979785645239, 19.1836648045981)

Please disregard the Google Maps directions to Stonewood Mountain Cabin directly as the roads have not yet been mapped and may provide confusing directions. Instead, please navigate to the Calabash Bush Pub and follow the directions from there. Please note that the roads in the reserve are not signposted so please follow the directions and map below for ease.

The cabin is accessed via a boom at the entrance to Mount Bain Private Nature Reserve, alongside Calabash Bush Pub. A lockbox will be available on the boom itself where you can collect your keys to open the boom (the code will be provided prior to your stay).

Once you enter the reserve, there will be four left turns that you need to make:

  • Take your first left when the road splits into a fork.
  • Continue on the road for a couple hundred meters and you will see the cabin above you to your left.
  • The road will then slope up to a T-Junction where you will turn left.
  • Continue up the hill to another T-Junction and turn left again.
  • At the top of the road, you will continue for about 50 meters and turn left into the gravel parking area of the cabin.
  • Walk down the steps towards the cabin and there will be another lockbox with the keys located next to the front door – use code provided prior to check-in.
